IN THE WORDS OF ALVIN TOFFLER ;

“The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.”

By instructing students how to learn, unlearn and relearn, a powerful new dimension can be added to education.

In the light of developing dental field, teaching imparted to undergraduates seems to be a matter of concern. It is seen that the curriculum is overdeveloping but the hours of study remains the same.

Once a graduate with basic dental science degree, dentists are expected to treat quite a varied number of cases on their own. Due to the growth in geriatric population and general dental awareness the approach to clinical dentistry is quite a challenge.

It’s time the academicians bring in a certain change in their approach and introduce a didactic style- to a more evidence based approach to teaching. A deeper focus on documentation methodologies and technological advances in undergraduate teaching can be put on a rise. Various forms of virtual teaching and stimulation based exercises could be introduced. Guided work based protocols, increase in contact between academic colleagues could help exchange of ideas and teaching aids.

It’s time for us to unlearn old protocols and form new ones especially for undergraduate teaching which at times can shadowed due to attention given to post graduate learning.
